Hal Anger and the Development of the Gamma Camera 1.    Introduction to Hal O. Anger Hal Oscar Anger (1920–2005) was an American physicist and biomedical engineer best known for his groundbreaking invention of the gamma camera, also known as the Anger camera. Born in California, Anger studied engineering physics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1943. He later joined the Radiation Laboratory at UC Berkeley, where he became involved in the development of instrumentation for nuclear medicine. His interdisciplinary background in both physics and engineering enabled him to bridge the gap between medical diagnostics and radiation detection, laying the foundation for a new era of medical imaging. Throughout his career, Anger was driven by a vision of improving non-invasive diagnostic methods and enhancing patient care through innovation in imaging technology. 2.
